Soul Trade

Hugh Mould stocks a wide range of Fair Trade goods at Copia Life.

One of the Waimakariri’s best kept secrets is housed at number 48 Blackett Street, just off the in-land scenic route. Copia Life was opened two years ago by the then 20-year-old Hugh Mould, an active leader at the Parish of Rangiora, who saw a gap in the local religious book market. The faith orientated store started as a small office decked out with a low black counter selling a selection of art, books, fair trade coffee and chocolate. But it soon became apparent to Hugh that more space was needed.
“At about the same time I had to find a new flat, it seemed like a wise idea to look for somewhere that could accommodate both the store and home.”

His new premises are a funky space, attracting clientele from Rangiora, Oxford, Amberley and even Christchurch every now and then. Hugh feels Copia Life is more than just another retail outlet and sees the interaction with his clients as a real ministry opportunity.
“The thing I have enjoyed most is discovering and encouraging many people who have disengaged with church for different reasons, but haven't disengaged with faith. God and faith are not always buried as deep in people thoughts as it might seem.”

Hugh says fair trade has been something of a buzzword of late, with Cadbury recently announcing their move towards fair trade cocoa in their dairy milk range due to public pressure. At the recent Synod, the Diocese was also reminded of its commitment towards being fair trade, and Hugh is a strong advocate of the concept. He sees it as a place where consumerism and social justice can work together for good.
“It all came about because Cadbury heard the voice of people like you and me, and saw organisations like the Diocese intentionally buying ethically. Copia Life sells fair trade as a local expression of this global message, one that makes a big difference to the growers, their families and communities.”

Copia Life is open Wednesdays 10am-5pm, Thursdays 2pm-7pm, & Saturdays 10am-2pm.
