A message from Phil Trotter, youth adviser...
I will be unveiling the complete Diocesan Youth Mentoring Resource kit at the Diocesan Conference at St. Margaret’s College on March 13th. Much of the work has been done on this already and is available now on-line in unedited form for those who want to get underway with mentoring and want some guidelines on:
The launch of the complete kit will be accompanied by planned training sessions and back up resources.
One resource that is available on-line now is the 1-2-1 Mentoring Booklet developed in 2009 by Brad Garrett (then Youth Ministry Enabler for South Canterbury) and Baptist Pastor Ross Hamilton. This provides outlines for 22 mentoring sessions. It is Christian based but focuses more on personal development than on discipleship.
It was at our Diocesan Youth Forum in 2009 that young people asked their church to provide them with Christian mentors. Synod passed a resolution to offer every young person in our diocese an adult Christian mentor from their church. We believe most faithful Christians have the capacity to be effective mentors of young people and the Diocese is committed to provide the resources, training and support necessary to make this happen. We encourage all adults in our Diocese to consider becoming a mentor.
Senior church leaders have spoken out against conditions at New Plymouth prison, labelling the cramped cells "a source of shame and disgrace".
