Youth Mentoring Resource Guide

01 Feb 2010

A message from Phil Trotter, youth adviser...

It was at our Diocesan Youth Forum in 2009 that young people asked their church to provide them with Christian mentors. Synod passed a resolution to offer every young person in our diocese an adult Christian mentor from their church. We believe most faithful Christians have the capacity to be effective mentors of young people and the Diocese is committed to provide the resources, training and support necessary to make this happen. We encourage all adults in our Diocese to consider becoming a mentor.

The "Mentoring Young People" guide can be downloaded via the link below, and will help teach you how to set up a mentoring relationship, structure a mentoring session, and test peoples readiness to be a mentor.

Parish Mentors Training Day - Saturday 24th April, 10am – 3:30pm, St. Mary’s Merivale. No cost
This day is for adults in Anglican / Cooperating parishes interested in mentoring young people in their parish. It will be led by Diocesan Youth Adviser, Phil Trotter. RSVP to Phil on youth@anglicanlife.org.nz or call 03 3630908.

1-2-1 Mentoring Booklet

Another local resource that is available on-line now is the 1-2-1 Mentoring Booklet developed in 2009 by Brad Garrett (then Youth Ministry Enabler for South Canterbury) and Baptist Pastor Ross Hamilton. This provides outlines for 22 mentoring sessions. It is Christian based but focuses more on personal development than on discipleship.
